Apple's First Touchscreen MacBook Pro Arrives With PROLED XDR and a $2,899 Starting Price
Apple has unveiled its first touchscreen MacBook Pro in 14- and 16-inch sizes, using tandem OLED panels branded PROLED XDR and M5 Pro or M5 Max chips. Pre-orders are open ahead of sales starting November 6, with the 14-inch M5 Pro model priced from $2,899. Touch input is designed to sit alongside the existing keyboard and trackpad rather than replace them, and several details — including which macOS version is required — remain unconfirmed.
Apple has spent years arguing that a laptop screen does not need to be touched. That argument is now over: the company has introduced a MacBook Pro with touch input, its first, at an event in Los Angeles. John Ternus introduced the machine on stage, and pre-orders are already open, with sales set to begin on November 6 ¹.
Two sizes are on offer, 14-inch and 16-inch, both built around tandem OLED displays Apple markets as PROLED XDR. The laptops run on M5 Pro or M5 Max chips. The National reports that the 14-inch M5 Pro configuration starts at $2,899, the 14-inch M5 Max at $4,499, and the 16-inch at $4,799 ². That same report describes a six-speaker sound system and notes that the illuminated Apple logo on the lid has returned, a detail last seen on Apple's laptops before it was phased out in 2015.
How touch actually works
Apple's framing is additive rather than disruptive. Users can swipe through web pages, pinch to zoom into photographs, drag presentation slides and resize windows directly, while keyboard shortcuts and trackpad gestures continue to work as before. Apple also redesigned the hinge so the screen stays stable when it is being pressed and prodded ³.
The more consequential detail is compatibility. Rather than requiring developers to rebuild their apps, macOS translates taps into clicks, so existing software responds to touch without modification. That is a pragmatic approach, and it also means the initial experience will likely feel more like a touch-enabled trackpad than a native tablet interface — my reading, not something Apple has spelled out. Dynamic Island also comes to the Mac, providing search, live updates and Siri AI.
Portability claims are notable for a machine adding a touch layer. The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds, half a pound less than its predecessor, and the 16-inch is 4 pounds, down 0.7 pounds, with Apple quoting up to 24 hours of battery life in a thinner, lighter chassis. The Aletihad report carrying those figures also notes the return of the glowing logo.
What is not yet confirmed
Several things a buyer would want to know are missing from the published reports. None of them state which version of macOS ships with the new machines or whether any specific build is required for touch support. There is no word on stylus or pen input, no regional pricing or availability outside the launch market, and no confirmed display specifications beyond the PROLED XDR branding — refresh rate, brightness and resolution are all unstated.
There is also an ambiguity in the pricing table: the 16-inch starting figure of $4,799 is not tied to a specific chip in the report, so which processor that entry configuration uses could not be confirmed. The MacBook Pro line is not new territory for aggressive discounting, either — the previous generation of M5 Pro hardware has already seen retail markdowns, as covered in our look at the 16-inch M5 Pro MacBook Pro price cut, which is worth keeping in mind if you are weighing a launch purchase against waiting.
What is clear is the strategic shift. Apple's hardware chief Johny Srouji called the machine a monumental step forward and claimed PROLED XDR is the world's best laptop display — a marketing assertion, not an independently verified result. Whether touch on a Mac is genuinely useful or merely a checkbox against Windows rivals will only be settled once the first units reach buyers on November 6.
