Device Compatibility

One of the most exciting aspects of iOS 18 is its device compatibility. Can you believe that iOS 18 will support every single iPhone currently running iOS 17? This means that if your iPhone runs iOS 17, you can look forward to updating to iOS 18 later this year. This includes devices like the iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone XR, iPhone XS, XS Max, and all newer models. This widespread compatibility is fantastic news for iPhone users.

In addition to iOS 18, Apple has also released beta versions for other platforms: iPadOS 18, macOS 15, tvOS 15, visionOS 2, and watchOS 11. However, today’s focus will remain on the myriad of new features in iOS 18.

Customizable Lock Screen Shortcuts

Starting with the lock screen, iOS 18 introduces a long-awaited feature: customizable lock screen shortcuts. By long-pressing on the lock screen, you can enter customization mode and select the lock screen. A new UI allows you to add or remove shortcuts by tapping the plus icon, which brings up a menu of pre-loaded options. You can also search for specific shortcuts. Whether you want to add a silent switch or a dark mode toggle, iOS 18 makes it possible. Additionally, Apple has opened this feature to developers, enabling them to create third-party application shortcuts. This fully customizable lock screen experience is a significant enhancement.

Redesigned Control Center

The Control Center has received a comprehensive redesign in iOS 18. It now offers extensive customization options and a new look. Swiping up on Control Center reveals different pages for favorites, connectivity, music, home controls, and all your connections like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and airplane mode. You can long-press to resize or remove elements from the Control Center. Additionally, developers can create their own Control Center extensions, providing even more customization once iOS 18 is officially released.

Home Screen Customization

The home screen customization options in iOS 18 are nothing short of revolutionary. Long-pressing on the home screen now offers two options: adding widgets and customizing the layout. You can change the appearance of your icons with automatic, dark, light, and tinted modes. The tinted mode allows you to adjust icon colors with a scrubber, and you can even make your icons larger or smaller. Moreover, you can place icons anywhere on the home screen, providing unprecedented flexibility.

App Locking with Face ID or Touch ID

One of the most requested features is finally here: the ability to lock individual applications using Face ID or Touch ID. This feature allows you to secure apps like the App Store by requiring authentication before opening them. Long-pressing an app icon and selecting the option to request Face ID or Touch ID locks the application. This security feature ensures that only you can access specific apps, enhancing privacy and security.

Phone and Messages Enhancements

The Phone and Messages applications are also receiving significant updates. Call recording and call transcripts will be available later this year, addressing a long-standing request from iPhone users. The Messages app will introduce text via SMS satellite, RCS support, and scheduled text messages. Additionally, new text formatting and effects, as well as emoji reactions, will enhance the messaging experience.

New Password Management App

iOS 18 introduces a new Passwords application, centralizing all your passwords in one place. This app allows you to manage Wi-Fi passwords, app passwords, passkeys, and security codes. You can also share passwords with family members and friends via Messages. This comprehensive password management solution simplifies keeping track of all your credentials.

Updated Settings App

The Settings app in iOS 18 has been reworked for a cleaner and more modern look. New icons and a more organized layout make navigating settings easier. Notable updates include refined Bluetooth, cellular service, and battery options. The new charging options allow you to choose between various optimization levels, enhancing battery management.

Siri and AI Integration

Siri has also received updates, with more AI integration on the horizon. While many new Siri features are not yet available in the beta, Apple Intelligence, the company’s AI, will bring significant enhancements to iOS and other Apple products. As more betas are released, additional features will become available, showcasing the full potential of Siri and AI in iOS 18.
