Galaxy Tab S6 Lite in 2024, Still Worth Buying?

Surprisingly, despite being slightly updated over its 2020 predecessor, this tablet manages to offer features that set it apart in its price category. Notably, the inclusion of the S Pen, a feature absent in its iPad counterpart, and the presence of a headphone jack add to its allure. The 10.4-inch screen, while not as vibrant as higher-end Samsung tablets, presents a satisfactory display for most users, although a tad more brightness could enhance the experience.

Running on Android 13 with One UI 5.1.1, the tablet promises a seamless experience, and with the anticipated Android 14 update, it should remain relevant for another year. The Snapdragon 720 processor marks a significant performance boost from its 2020 iteration, providing ample power for everyday tasks. However, it falls short of the performance offered by the Tab S8 or S9 Fe series.

The tablet's non-AMOLED 10.4-inch screen, boasting a resolution of 2000 x 1200, holds its ground against competitors in its category. With support for up to 2160p resolution on YouTube and full HD playback on platforms like Netflix, its display remains competitive even in 2024. The device exhibits sturdy build quality, albeit with a slightly dated feel when compared to the more modern S9 Fe series.

Despite its modest gaming capabilities, handling titles like PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9 with relative smoothness, it may necessitate compromising on graphics settings or frame rates. An improvement in battery life, now lasting around 7.5 hours in battery drain tests, positions it as an above-average performer in its category.

The introduction of Samsung DeX adds a productivity dimension to this tablet, aligning it more closely with traditional PCs. However, the absence of a Pogo pin restricts the use of an official keyboard, although third-party Bluetooth keyboards offer a viable alternative. An HDMI adapter is not supported for external monitor use, distinguishing it from the S8 and S9 series.

While the speakers may not match the volume of higher-end tablets, the inclusion of a headphone jack, coupled with Dolby Atmos, enhances the audio experience. The front-facing camera, though adequate for video conferences, features a side placement, which may not be ideal.

For current owners of the 2020 version, upgrading to the Tab S6 Lite may not be a compelling proposition. Instead, considering the S9 FE series could offer a more substantial upgrade. In 2024, choosing between the Tab S6 Lite and its counterparts like the S9 Fe or Tab S8 depends on personal preferences and budget constraints, especially for users who value the compatibility with the S Pen.
