Techbear TB8-TKL, Worth to Buy?

Introducing the Techbear TB8-TKL, a tenkeyless keyboard from Techbear Studio, a relatively unknown Chinese keyboard design studio. With no significant online presence except for a profile on Chinese Z Frontier, this appears to be their debut design. Despite the studio's low profile, the TB8 has already made waves through a group buy on ClickCl.

Overview of the Techbear TB8-TKL

Now, let’s focus on the Techbear TB8-TKL. This keyboard features either a gasket or top-mounted design, catering to different user preferences. One of its standout features is the innovative ball catch screwless assembly, which contributes to its sleek profile with a front height of approximately 23 mm and a 7° typing angle. Users can choose between flex and non-flex cut options, with plates available in aluminum, FR4, or polycarbonate. Additionally, the keyboard supports tri-mode wireless connectivity, enhancing its versatility.

Acoustic Performance and Typing Experience

A prevalent trend among keyboards in the $200 price range is the ubiquitous use of foam, leading to a somewhat muted sound signature. To evaluate the TB8-TKL's true acoustic performance, I conducted typing tests without any foam. Using Cherry MX Blacks and HMX Swift switches with GMK Camping Round 2 keycaps, I noticed the keyboard sounded decent, albeit with a slight hollowness. This characteristic seems common among ball catch easy assembly boards, suggesting a trade-off in sound quality due to the less secure fastening compared to traditional screws.

Comparison with Competitors

Comparing the TB8-TKL to other keyboards in its price range, such as the Cy Keys Neo 80 priced at approximately $155, the TB8-TKL comes in at around $185. Another notable competitor is the upcoming Cycle 8 from TKD, a collaboration between Vertex and Equals. Both boards share similar features, but the Cycle 8 offers a lower front height of 17.5 mm and a slightly steeper 8° typing angle. Additionally, the Cycle 8 supports split o-ring mounts, although my experience with this feature on the NK 75 hasn't convinced me of its benefits over traditional gasket socks.

The Techbear TB8-TKL is a solid contender in the affordable high-quality keyboard market. Its innovative ball catch assembly, versatile mounting options, and sleek design with subtle RGB accents make it a compelling choice. Despite some initial skepticism due to Enland Keys' logistical challenges, the TB8-TKL stands out as a well-designed, comfortable keyboard that performs admirably even without the reliance on foam. For enthusiasts looking for a new addition to their collection, the TB8-TKL offers a unique and enjoyable typing experience.
